Throughout his career, he has mastered many musical genres. These include pop, ballads, jazz, big band, and tango. He is also famous for performing boleros and mariachi music. Unlike many of his peers during the 1990s "Latin Explosion," he did not cross over into the Anglo music market. Instead, he remained a dominant force in Spanish and Italian language music. He has sold approximately 60 million records globally.

His musical journey began in Mexico in 1981. As a child, his father, Luisito Rey, served as his manager. His father encouraged him to study the performances of Elvis Presley. This early training helped him develop his professional skills. By age 11, he earned his first gold disc for the album *Un Sol*. At age 14, he became one of the youngest Grammy winners in history. He achieved this after performing the duet "Me Gustas Tal Como Eres" with Sheena Easton.

As he transitioned into adulthood, his musical style evolved significantly. In 1984, he explored Spanish pop rock with the album *Palabra de Honor*. By 1988, he moved from being a child star to an adult superstar. His album *Busca una Mujer* featured the hit "La Incondicional," which stayed in the top ten for seven months. This period also saw him change his appearance by cutting his signature long hair. His 1990 album, *20 Años*, sold 600,000 copies in its first week alone. This success helped cement his reputation as a major international performer.

One of his most significant achievements was the reinvention of the bolero genre. In 1991, he released the album *Romance*, which focused on romantic boleros from the 1950s. This album sold 7 million units worldwide and brought the genre to a mainstream audience. He followed this with *Segundo Romance* in 1994. This sequel earned him another Grammy and platinum status in the United States. He was the first Latino artist to earn two platinum certifications for Spanish-language albums in the U.S.

His album *México En La Piel* won a Grammy for Best Mexican/Mexican-American Album. In 2003, he received the "Premio Lo Nuestro a la Excelencia," a lifetime achievement award. He was the youngest artist to receive this honor.

His live performances are known for being high-grossing and captivating. Since 1990, he has been the highest-grossing Latino touring artist. His total touring gross is $633.1 million from 6.3 million spectators.

His 2023–24 tour was a massive undertaking. He performed 194 shows across 20 countries in North America, South America, and Europe. This tour became the highest-grossing tour ever made by a Latin artist. He also holds a record for the most consecutive concerts at the Auditorio Nacional, with 30 in a row. In total, he has performed at that venue 258 times.

Luis Miguel's career connects various cultural and commercial systems. He ranks number two on Billboard's Greatest of All-Time Latin Artists chart. His ability to sell millions of records in different countries shows his broad appeal. Even his 2008 album, *Cómplices*, reached number 10 on the mainstream Billboard 200. This was a historic peak for a fully Spanish-composed album by a Latin artist. Whether through traditional mariachi or modern pop, his work continues to influence the global music landscape.
