Raphael's performance style is unique and highly dramatic. He does not simply sing his songs on stage. Instead, he acts them out using intense gestures and movements. He often uses his wide vocal range to evoke different emotions. During a show, he might wear Latin American peasant costumes. He may perform folk dances or imitate a flamenco dancer. He has even been known to mimic a bullfighter. In some performances, he has even kicked and demolished a mirror. He also frequently ad libs his lyrics to connect with specific venues.

His journey began in Linares, Spain, where he was born Miguel Rafael Martos Sánchez. He started singing when he was only three years old. At age four, he joined a children's choir. When he was nine, he traveled to Salzburg, Austria. There, he was recognized as the best child voice in Europe. Growing up, he admired singers like Elvis Presley and Edith Piaf. To distinguish his professional identity, he adopted the "ph" from the Philips record label. This led him to choose the stage name Raphael.

Raphael rose to international fame through several major musical milestones. In 1962 and 1963, he won first, second, and third place awards at the Benidorm Song Festival. He later represented Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest. In 1966, he sang "Yo soy aquél" in Luxembourg and finished in seventh place. In 1967, he sang "Hablemos del amor" in Vienna and placed sixth. These performances were significant for Spain at the time. They helped pave the way for future Spanish victories in the contest. His success made him a true international star.

His popularity spread across the globe through touring and recording. He performed in Europe, Latin America, Russia, Japan, and the United States. In 1967, he played for 48,000 people at Madison Square Garden in New York City. He also found great success in Mexico by recording Latin American folk standards. These included songs like "Huapango torero" and "Llorona." In 1980, he achieved a massive milestone in his recording career. He received a Uranium record for surpassing 50 million records sold. This makes him one of the best-selling Latin music artists in history.

Beyond music, Raphael built a productive career in film and television. He starred in several movies, such as "Cuando tú no estás" and "Al ponerse el Sol." He also appeared in the stage musical Jekyll & Hyde in the year 2000. On television, he hosted his own program called "El Mundo de Raphael." This show allowed him to sing alongside various international stars. He also starred in Mexican soap operas, such as "Donde termina el camino." His ability to work across different media helped cement his status as a major entertainer.

Today, Raphael remains an active and respected figure in the arts. He continues to tour regularly across Europe and the Americas. He has received many prestigious honors for his life's work. In 2022, he earned the Billboard Latin Music Lifetime Achievement Award. The Latin Recording Academy named him Person of the Year in 2025. His legacy is preserved in the Raphael Museum in Linares.
