He became a massive cultural icon through his music and film work. People often called him "El Charro de México," which means "Mexico's Horseman." This nickname honored his connection to la charrería. La charrería is a traditional Mexican equestrian sport. Aguilar is credited with sharing this sport with international audiences. He was also the first Mexican performer to combine rodeos with musical concerts.

Aguilar's musical career was incredibly productive and successful. He began his recording journey in 1950 on the Mexican radio station XEW. That same year, he signed a contract with Musart Records. He became one of the most successful artists for that independent label. Over his lifetime, he recorded more than 150 different albums. These recordings sold over 25 million copies to fans. His music featured rancheras, which are Mexican folk songs. He also specialized in corridos, which are a type of ballad. Some of his most recognized songs include "Gabino Barrera" and "Caballo prieto azabache."

His acting career blossomed during the Golden Age of Mexican cinema. Aguilar made his film debut in 1952. He appeared in the drama Un rincón cerca del cielo alongside Pedro Infante. After playing various gentleman roles, he found massive popularity as a star. In the mid-1950s, he played a lawman named Mauricio Rosales. This character appeared in a series of seven different films. These films were low-budget ranchera movies produced by Rosas Films S.A. The series included titles like El rayo justiciero and La pantera negra.

As his fame grew, Aguilar took on even more significant roles. He gained cinematic notice through his work with director Ismael Rodríguez. He starred in films such as Tierra de hombres, La Cucaracha, and Ánimas Trujano.

During the 1960s, he shifted his focus toward the Mexican Revolution. He portrayed the famous leader Emiliano Zapata in a 1970 epic film. This performance earned him the Latin ACE Award for Best Actor. He also portrayed the historical figure Pancho Villa in two separate films. He even appeared in American Western films, such as the 1969 movie The Undefeated.

Aguilar received many prestigious awards for his lifelong dedication to the arts. In 1997, he was awarded the Golden Ariel. This award recognized his invaluable contribution to spreading Mexican cinema. In 1997, he also achieved a major milestone in New York City. He was the only Hispanic artist to sell out Madison Square Garden for six consecutive nights. In 2000, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He also earned the Excellence Award at the Lo Nuestro Awards that year. In 2004, he was honored with a Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Music and performance were central to the Aguilar family identity. His second wife, Flor Silvestre, was also a famous singer and actress. They had two sons named Antonio Aguilar Hijo and Pepe Aguilar. Both sons followed in their father's footsteps as singers and actors. Because of this multi-generational success, they are known as "la dinastía Aguilar." This translates to "the Aguilar dynasty." The family remains a significant part of the entertainment landscape.

Aguilar's influence reached across many different fields of culture. He connected traditional Mexican music with large-scale live entertainment. He bridged the gap between Mexican folk traditions and international cinema. His work helped bring Mexican equestrian culture to a global stage. He remains a symbol of Mexican identity in both music and film. His legacy continues through his recorded music and his family's ongoing work.
