He became a central figure during the Golden Age of Mexican cinema. This era was a peak period for the country's film industry. Infante acted in over 60 motion pictures during his career. He also recorded more than 350 songs.

His musical range included rancheras, boleros, waltzes, and cha-cha-chas. These genres helped establish him as a top star in mariachi music. His 1952 ranchera album, *Cuando sale la luna*, remains highly respected. In 2024, it was ranked as the 56th greatest Latin music album of all time.

Infante's musical journey began in Sinaloa. He was born on November 18, 1917, in Mazatlán. He grew up in Guamúchil as part of a very large family. His father, Delfino Infante García, was a double bass player in a band. This musical environment influenced Pedro from a young age. As a teenager, he even built his own guitar in a carpenter shop. He studied under Carlos R. Hubbard to master various instruments. By 1933, he had formed his own band named La Rabia. He eventually learned to play strings, wind, and percussion instruments.

His path to stardom involved a move to Mexico City. His wife, María Luisa León, encouraged this move for better radio opportunities. In 1938, at age 21, he auditioned for the radio station XEB. Although an artistic director initially suggested he stay a carpenter, Infante persisted. He was hired to sing on the air three times a week. His first official musical recording, "El soldado raso," occurred in November 1943. He soon transitioned from radio to the silver screen. He began as an extra in *En un burro tres baturros* before landing leading roles in 1943.

Infante's acting career was defined by deep connections to the public. During the 1940s, massive migration moved people from the countryside to cities. This urbanization created a new urban working class living in *vecindades*. These were groups of small apartments built around a common patio. Infante's character, Pepe el Toro, helped these people feel represented. He appeared in a famous trilogy including *Nosotros los pobres* and *Ustedes los ricos*. He also worked frequently with the actress Sara García. She often played his no-nonsense grandmother in their films.

His talent earned him significant international and domestic honors. For his performance in the film *Tizoc*, he received a Silver Bear for Best Actor. This award was presented at the 7th Berlin International Film Festival. The film *Tizoc* also won a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film in 1958. In Mexico, he won the prestigious Ariel Award for Best Actor.

This passion for flying eventually led to a tragic end. On April 15, 1957, he was flying a Consolidated B-24D freighter. He was traveling from Mérida, Yucatán, to Mexico City. Five minutes after takeoff, an engine failed. The plane spiraled down, killing Infante and two others on board. Two more people died on the ground during the accident. His identity was confirmed through a gold bracelet and a metal plate in his forehead.

His death caused an unprecedented wave of grief across Latin America. Reports described fans experiencing nervous breakdowns and fainting. Approximately 300,000 people gathered for his closed-casket funeral.
