In 2015, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama.

Estefan's musical journey began with the group Miami Sound Machine. She first met Emilio Estefan, Jr. during a church ensemble rehearsal in 1975. At that time, Emilio was part of a band called the Miami Latin Boys. Gloria and her cousin, Mercedes "Merci" Navarro, performed two Cuban standards at a wedding. This impromptu performance led to them joining the band permanently. The group eventually changed its name to Miami Sound Machine.

The band achieved global fame following the 1985 release of the single "Conga." This song became her signature track. Other major hits from this era include "Anything for You," "1-2-3," and "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You."

The group's identity evolved as Estefan's fame grew. In 1987, the group was renamed Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine. This change followed the release of the multi-platinum album *Let It Loose*. By 1989, Estefan transitioned into a solo career. Her debut solo album, *Cuts Both Ways*, became her best-selling work to date. This album featured several hits, such as the number-one song "Don't Wanna Lose You."

Her ability to perform both dance tracks and pop ballads helped her reach diverse audiences.

In March 1990, Estefan faced a life-threatening medical crisis. While touring for *Cuts Both Ways*, her bus was struck by a semi-truck. The accident occurred near Scranton, Pennsylvania, during a snowstorm. Estefan sustained a severe cervical fracture of her spine.

She underwent emergency surgery to stabilize her vertebral column. Surgeons implanted two titanium rods to support her spine. Following the surgery, she underwent nearly a year of intensive physical therapy. Despite the intense pain, she made a full recovery. She returned to the stage with the album *Into the Light* in 1991. Her song "Coming Out of the Dark" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Estefan's heritage is deeply connected to her musical style and personal history. She was born Gloria María Milagrosa Fajardo García in Havana, Cuba. Her family moved to Miami, Florida, in 1959 following the Cuban Revolution.

Her family helped establish one of the first Cuban restaurants in Miami. Her musical roots were strong, as her paternal lineage included a famous flautist and a classical pianist. Estefan also holds a B.A. in psychology from the University of Miami. While a student, she used her language skills to work as a translator at the airport.

This multilingual background likely aided her international success.

Her impact on Latin music is supported by significant statistics. Billboard has identified her as the second-most successful Latina artist in the U.S. She is also ranked as the 23rd-greatest Latin artist of all time. Estefan has achieved 38 number-one hits across various Billboard charts. This includes 15 songs that reached the top of the Hot Latin Songs chart. Her 1993 Spanish-language album, *Mi Tierra*, was a major milestone. It was the first Diamond album in Spain and won a Grammy Award for Best Tropical Latin Album.

This album proved her ability to dominate the Spanish-speaking market.

Beyond her music, Estefan has received numerous prestigious honors. She has been awarded stars on both the Hollywood and Las Vegas Walks of Fame. In 2017, she received the Kennedy Center Honors for her contributions to American culture. Her songwriting skills have also been recognized through induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has earned an American Music Award for Lifetime Achievement and an MTV Video Music Award. These honors reflect her enduring presence in the global arts and culture landscape. Her life serves as a testament to resilience and artistic dedication.
