Throughout his career, he has blended various musical styles to reach global audiences. He is recognized for his ability to perform on many different radio charts. Jean has achieved significant success both as a group member and as a solo artist. His influence extends into film scoring and international songwriting. He also uses his platform to engage in Haitian politics and philanthropy.

Jean's musical journey began in his childhood in Haiti. Born in Croix-des-Bouquets on October 17, 1969, he was named after the scholar John Wycliffe. When he was nine years old, he emigrated to the United States with his family. They eventually settled in New Jersey. His mother recognized his musical talent and bought him a guitar.

As a teenager, he used music as a way to earn respect. He was influenced by reggae artists and local producers.

In 1990, Jean helped form a hip hop trio in New Jersey. The group was originally called Tranzlator Crew. The members were Jean, Lauryn Hill, and Pras Michel. They later renamed themselves the Fugees, which is an abbreviation of "refugees."

Their debut album, Blunted on Reality, was released in 1994. While it had limited success, it helped establish their presence. The group eventually signed with Ruffhouse Records and Columbia Records in 1993.

The Fugees reached massive success with their second album, The Score, in 1996. This album topped the Billboard 200 chart. It was later certified six-times platinum by the RIAA. The album featured several notable singles. "Fu-Gee-La" reached number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100. The group also released a cover of "Killing Me Softly." This song topped charts in many countries, including the United Kingdom and Australia. Another cover, "No Woman, No Cry," reached number one in New Zealand.

Following the breakup of the Fugees in 1997, Jean launched a solo career. His first major solo project was Wyclef Jean Presents The Carnival. This album featured guests like the I Threes and Celia Cruz. It produced the hit "Gone till November," which was recorded with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. His second solo album, The Ecleftic: 2 Sides II a Book, was released in 2000. This album received platinum certification from the RIAA. It included the top 40 single "911," featuring Mary J. Blige.

Jean has also become a highly successful songwriter and collaborator for other artists. He co-wrote "My Love Is Your Love" for Whitney Houston. He also co-wrote "Maria Maria" for Santana. In 2006, he appeared on Shakira's single "Hips Don't Lie." That song reached number one in over 55 countries.

He even co-wrote the official 2014 FIFA World Cup anthem, "Dar um Jeito (We Will Find a Way)." This was done alongside artists like Avicii and Carlos Santana. His work on Santana's Supernatural album was later recognized by the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Beyond music, Jean has been deeply involved in the affairs of Haiti. In 2007, he was appointed Ambassador-at-Large of Haiti. He later attempted to run for the Haitian presidency in 2010. However, the electoral commission ruled him ineligible. This was because the constitution requires candidates to have lived in Haiti for five years.
