He is widely recognized as a pioneer of the neo-soul movement. This musical style blends various elements of soul, R&B, and hip hop. Major publications have celebrated his immense talent. Billboard named him one of the greatest R&B artists. Rolling Stone ranked him among the 200 greatest singers of all time. In 2025, he received induction into the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame.

His musical foundation began in Richmond, Virginia, within a Pentecostal family. His father served as a preacher at a local church. D'Angelo began playing the piano during these religious services. His natural ability was evident at a very young age. When he was only three, his ten-year-old brother discovered him playing the house piano. Later, he joined a musical group called Precise. The group traveled to New York City to perform at the Apollo Theater. They won three consecutive Amateur Night competitions, earning cash prizes for their skill.

After moving to New York City, D'Angelo began building a professional career. He first gained significant attention in 1994 through the song "U Will Know." This track was for the R&B supergroup Black Men United. D'Angelo co-wrote and co-produced the song. The group included famous artists like Usher, R. Kelly, and Boyz II Men. His brother, Luther Archer, wrote the lyrics for the track. D'Angelo also served as the choir director for the song's music video. This early success helped build his reputation among music industry professionals.

In July 1995, D'Angelo released his debut solo album, Brown Sugar. The album was a major commercial and critical success. It eventually earned a platinum certification from the RIAA. This means it shipped over one million copies in the United States. The album featured several notable tracks. These included the song "Brown Sugar" and a cover of "Cruisin'." The song "Lady" reached the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100. The album remained on the Billboard 200 chart for sixty-five weeks.

Following his debut, D'Angelo experienced a period of reduced musical activity. He struggled with writer's block, which he described as a need to live life to write better songs. During this time, he focused on covers and collaborations. He performed with artists like Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill. In 2000, he released his second album, Voodoo, on Virgin Records. This album debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200. It sold 320,000 copies in its first week alone. The album was later certified platinum and sold over 1.7 million copies in the U.S.

*Voodoo* earned significant honors at the Grammy Awards. The album won the award for Best R&B Album. D'Angelo also won Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for the song "Untitled (How Does It Feel)." Rolling Stone included the album on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. His career also faced challenges due to personal struggles. He dealt with depression, drug addiction, and alcoholism. These issues resulted in several years where he produced very little music. He spent over a decade mostly away from the public eye.

In 2014, D'Angelo made a major return with his third and final album, Black Messiah. The album was a critical triumph and debuted in the top five of the Billboard 200. It topped the year-end Pazz & Jop critics' poll by The Village Voice. At the 58th Grammy Awards, the album won Best R&B Album. The single "Really Love" won the award for Best R&B Song. He also contributed the song "Unshaken" to the video game Red Dead Redemption 2. D'Angelo died in 2025 from pancreatic cancer while working on a fourth album.
