Sex magic is a term for using sexual activity in spiritual or religious ways. Many people who practice this believe that sexual energy is a very strong force. They think this energy can be used to reach a different kind of reality. One common way people use it is through visualization. This means they focus on a specific goal while they feel sexual arousal.

In the 1800s, an American man named Paschal Beverly Randolph developed a famous system. He was the son of a wealthy Virginian father and a slave mother. Randolph believed that the moment of orgasm was the most powerful human experience. He taught that this moment opens the soul to a divine realm. To make his magic work, he said partners must reach orgasm at the same time. He also believed the practice required a 49-day period of focus and mental cleanliness.

Later, these ideas moved to Europe and influenced many secret societies. One famous group was called the Ordo Templi Orientis, or O.T.O. It was started by Carl Kellner and Theodor Reuss. A well-known figure named Aleister Crowley later became a leader in this group. Crowley believed that sex was a supreme magical power. He wrote many books about these ideas, such as "The Book of Lies." Some of his teachings were kept secret for only certain members to see.

Other thinkers brought different perspectives to these spiritual practices. Maria de Naglowska was a Russian writer who lived in Paris. She led a group called the Brotherhood of the Golden Arrow. She published books that helped spread Paschal Beverly Randolph's ideas in Europe. Another man, Samael Aun Weor, taught a method called "white sexual magic." He believed people should use willpower to change their energy without releasing it through orgasm. He thought this helped a person grow spiritually through a process called transmutation.

These different beliefs show how many ways people think about energy and the soul. While some use the release of energy for magic, others believe in saving it. These ideas have been part of many different traditions and groups over many years. Some thinkers even linked these practices to art movements, like the surrealists in Paris. Whether through secret societies or personal study, these ideas continue to be a part of how people explore the world.
