He led a group of followers known as Frankists. He claimed to be a reincarnation of the biblical patriarch Jacob. He also said he was the successor to Sabbatai Zevi. This was a man who had claimed to be a messiah. Frank's ideas were very different from traditional Jewish beliefs. He taught that people could find a way to holiness by breaking religious laws. He believed this was a way to hasten a special time of redemption.

His movement grew through many different steps and changes. In the early 1750s, Frank began preaching his new revelations. He had traveled to places like Salonica and Smyrna in the Ottoman Empire. These trips helped him learn from other groups like the Dönmeh. After some trouble in Podolia, he moved to Iwania. There, he told his followers he received messages from Heaven. These messages eventually led his followers to change their faith. They moved from Judaism toward the Christian religion.

The history of Frankism is full of big changes and many people. Frank was born around 1726, likely in Korołówka. His father was a follower of the Sabbatean movement. In 1759, a major event happened in the city of Lwów. Many Frankists decided to be baptized into the Roman Catholic Church. During one year, more than 500 people joined the Church in Lwów. Nearly a thousand more joined the following year. Frank himself was baptized in Lwów on September 17, 1759. He then went to Warsaw to be baptized again.

Life was not always easy for Frank and his followers. He was arrested in Warsaw in February 1760. A church court found him guilty of heresy. He spent thirteen years in the Jasna Góra Monastery in Częstochowa. This time in prison actually made him seem more important to his followers. They saw him as a martyr for his cause. After he was released in 1772, he lived in the town of Brno. He later moved to Germany and lived in Isenburg Castle. There, he used the title Baron of Offenbach.

Frank's influence lasted long after his death in 1790. His daughter, Eve, took over as the leader of the sect. The Frankist group eventually spread out into many different families. Some of these families joined the middle class and the nobility. Some historians believe that famous Polish figures had Frankist roots. For example, some say the poet Adam Mickiewicz had ancestors from this group. The movement shows how religious ideas can change over many years. It also shows how people find new ways to express their faith.
