They were known as a mystic community. This means they focused on deep spiritual ideas. Many thinkers see them as one of the three main Jewish groups of their time. This was alongside the Pharisees and the Sadducees. They lived by very specific rules and shared a special way of life.

Life for an Essene was very organized and communal. This means they lived together and shared everything they owned. They did not use money or keep personal property.

Instead, they practiced a way of living where everyone helped each other. They did not have slaves. They chose to serve one another instead. Some members did not marry at all. Others would be engaged for three years before they could wed. They even had a special way of washing in water every single morning.

History tells us how this group likely began. Many scholars believe they started during the time of Jonathan Apphus. They may have left a group of priests called the Zadokites. This happened because of disagreements over Jewish law. They followed a leader known as the Teacher of Righteousness. This leader helped them interpret the Torah, which is their holy book.

They wanted to live a very pure and holy life.

We know many details from ancient writers. A man named Josephus wrote a lot about them. He said they were very careful to follow the Sabbath. Another writer named Philo said there were more than four thousand Essenes. They lived in many cities and villages in Judaea.

A Roman writer named Pliny the Elder placed them near the west side of the Dead Sea. He noted they lived above a place called Ein Gedi. They were very dedicated to their studies and their peace.

Today, the Essenes are famous because of a huge discovery. Archaeologists found the Dead Sea Scrolls at a site called Qumran.

Many people believe these scrolls were the library of the Essenes. The scrolls include many copies of the Hebrew Bible. They also contain special writings like the Community Rule and the War Scroll. These ancient papers help us understand how people lived long ago. Some researchers even wonder if Essene ideas influenced other traditions later on.
