Seenu Atoll is a special place in the Maldives. It is also called Addu Atoll. It sits at the very bottom of the country.

This atoll is in the Southern Hemisphere. It is 540 km south of Malé, the capital city. Addu Atoll is home to Addu City. This city includes five inhabited islands. These are Hulhudhoo, Meedhoo, Maradhoo, Feydhoo, and Hithadhoo. The island of Gan is also part of the atoll. Gan is where the Gan International Airport sits.

The geography of this place is very unique. Most atolls do not have a lagoon like this one. This lagoon is a natural anchorage for boats.

Four natural channels let boats move in and out. These are the Kuda and Maa channels in the north. The Gan channel is in the south. The Villingili channel is in the southeast. These paths make the harbor calm and safe. Barrier reefs protect the islands from big waves in the Indian Ocean. You can see coconut palms growing almost everywhere. There are also small lakes and marshy taro fields.

History tells us many things about the name Addu. In the local language, "ah" means eight and "dhoo" means island. This is because there were eight inhabited islands. These were Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, Maradhoo-Feydhoo, Feydhoo, Gan, Hulhudhoo, Hulhu-Meedhoo, and Meedhoo.

The island of Meedhoo has some of the oldest settlements in the Maldives. During the Second World War, the British used the atoll for a secret base. They called it HMS Haitan. They built oil tanks and an airstrip on Gan. This base was a secret from the enemy for many years. In 1957, it became RAF Gan. It stayed open until 1976.

Many amazing living things call this atoll home. The white tern is a special bird found here. People call it "dhondheeni." It is a symbol of the islands.

The ocean around the atoll is full of whales and dolphins. The coral reefs here are very healthy and bright. In 1998, many corals in the Maldives turned white from heat. This is called coral bleaching. But the corals in Addu Atoll stayed healthy. This happened because the warm ocean currents did not reach this far south. The healthy reefs start just one meter under the water.

People in the atoll have their own way of speaking. They use the Addu dialect. This is a bit different from the official Dhivehi language.

Long ago, many educated people in the south used this dialect. It was a very famous way of speaking in the Maldives. The culture of the islands has also changed over time. In the past, families were sometimes ruled by women. This is called a matriarchal society. Today, the way people live and work is different. Even with different ways of speaking, the written language is the same everywhere.
