Farmers place these decoys in open fields to protect their work. They often wear old clothes to look like humans. This helps stop birds like crows or sparrows from visiting. The birds might try to eat newly planted seeds. They might also try to eat growing crops. Using a scarecrow is a way to keep the food safe.

There are many ways to keep birds away from plants. Some farmers use machines like windmills as decoys. However, animals sometimes get used to these moving parts. Other farmers use shiny, reflective ribbons on their plants. These ribbons shimmer when the sun hits them. Some people use loud noise guns that run on propane gas. One winery in New York even uses inflatable tube men. These are called airdancers and they move in the wind.
