Artists, tailors, and shop workers use them to show off clothing. They help people see how different fabrics and textiles look. Sometimes the word refers to a human fashion model. Other times, it describes a model of a human body used in computers. These dolls can be very helpful tools for many different tasks. They allow people to practice skills without using a real person.

There are many ways these models work.

In stores, they stand in windows to decorate the shop. Some are made of plastic to survive busy crowds of shoppers. Other models use fiberglass to look much more realistic. Artists use a jointed version called a lay figure. These have moving parts to help with drawing poses. Doctors use special manikins to practice first aid or breathing skills. These models can even have simulated airways for medical training.

History shows how these dolls have changed over time.

Long ago, people in Flanders used small dolls made of reed. These were sent to Paris along rivers like the Schelde. The word mannequin comes from the French word for an artist's model. In the 15th century, small models helped show fashion to customers. By the mid-18th century, people used larger models made of wicker. In the mid-19th century, France made the first female models from papier-mâché.

Different people have used mannequins for very specific reasons.

In the 17th century, doctors used ivory models to study anatomy. These models could open to show internal organs. During the 1950s, mannequins helped show the effects of nuclear tests. Even soldiers have used them in history. Ancient Chinese armies used scarecrows to trick enemies during sieges. In World War I, dummies were used to distract snipers. The CIA even used a mannequin named "Jack-in-the-Box" for secret work.

Today, we see mannequins in many parts of our culture. They appear in many famous paintings and photographs. Some movies even tell stories about them. One film is a romantic comedy where a mannequin comes to life. Another is a science fiction story about killer plastic models. They are also used in computer simulations to model the human body. Whether in a shop window or a doctor's office, they remain very important.
