He lived during the late Goryeo dynasty. He became a monk when he was only eight years old. Il-yeon worked in many different temples during his life. He wrote the book around the year 1280. At that time, the Mongols were invading Korea and East Asia. This was a very hard time for the people. Il-yeon wanted to protect the folklore and stories of his people. He did not want their history to be destroyed.

One of the most important parts is the Dangun legend.

This story tells how Dangun Wanggeom founded Gojoseon. Gojoseon was the very first Korean nation. This legend is a major part of Korean identity. The book also includes well-known tales like "Choshin's Dream." It contains fourteen pieces of hyangga, which are ancient folk songs. These songs are very important for studying old Korean literature. The book even provides details about ancient Buddhist art and pagodas.

People often compare this book to another one called Samguk sagi.

Both books are very important for Korean history. However, they have very different styles. The Samguk sagi was written by a Confucian scholar. It focuses more on facts and logic. The Samguk yusa was written by a Buddhist monk. It includes more myths, legends, and magical stories. Together, these two books help complete the picture of the past. They work together to show us the whole history.
