Samguk sagi

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Samguk sagi is a very important history book.

It tells the story of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. These three lands were called Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla. This book is special because it is the oldest surviving record of Korean history. Many people study it to learn about the past. It helps us understand how these ancient lands lived and grew. Without this book, much of their history might be lost forever.

Writing this book was a very big job.

A man named Kim Busik was the lead historian. He was a government official who led a team of junior scholars. They worked together to gather all the facts. They wrote the book using Classical Chinese. This was the special way smart people wrote in ancient Korea. The team spent a long time making sure the history was recorded correctly.

Kim Busik did not start from nothing.

He used many older records to write his work. Some of these older books, like the Hwarang Segi, are gone now. He also looked at many records from China. He used the Records of the Three Kingdoms and the Book of Wei. He did not use records from Japan. He wanted to make sure he had the best information possible.

The finished book is quite large.

It is divided into 50 different books. Some books tell the stories of the kings from Silla. Other books tell the history of Goguryeo and Baekje. There are also parts called monographs. These parts talk about things like music, clothes, and homes. There are even biographies about famous people like Kim Yusin. Some parts even show how people used to speak long ago.

Today, we can still learn from the Samguk sagi.

The National Institute of Korean History has put it online. You can see the text on a computer. It also has a translation in Modern Korean. This makes it easy for people to read. It is still a key tool for anyone studying the Three Kingdoms. The book connects the ancient world to the world we know today.
