Sacred tradition is a special idea in Christianity. The word tradition comes from Latin. It means "to hand over."

Many Christian groups use this to share their faith. They believe truths are passed down from one generation to the next. Some groups, like the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches, see the Bible and tradition as one. They believe these two sources work together. For these groups, tradition helps people understand the holy book.

Other groups have different views. Lutheran and Reformed Christians believe in "sola scriptura." This means they believe the Bible alone is the basis for teaching. They still value old writings. However, they do not put them on the same level as the Bible. Anglican and Methodist churches use a middle way. They look at the Bible, tradition, and reason. They use these to help their faith grow. For many, tradition is a way to stay connected to the past. It keeps the teachings of the early church alive today.
