Many people have special books. These are called religious texts. They are very important to a faith. These books share beliefs and rules. They also teach people how to act.

Some people call these books scripture. This word comes from a Latin word for writing. Some texts are seen as holy. This means they come from a god. Other texts are just stories about a faith. They might talk about important people or ideas.

Groups often use a list called a canon. A canon is a set of accepted books. The word comes from a Greek word for a measuring tool. It acts like a rule or a standard. Some books are in the canon. Other books are not. This can happen when groups disagree.

Many of these stories were once spoken. People memorized them for a long time. Then, they wrote them down.

Some texts are very old. The Kesh Temple Hymn is on clay tablets. It is from ancient Sumer. The Rigveda is also very old. It is a text for Hinduism. Before the printing press, people wrote every book by hand. This meant there were not many copies.
