Roystonea palms are very large and beautiful trees. They belong to a group of eleven different species. These palms grow in warm areas called the Neotropics. You can find them in the Caribbean and Mexico. They also grow in Central and South America. Some grow near the coasts of Florida in the United States.

People often plant them to make landscapes look striking.

These palms have a very special way of growing. The stems are smooth and look like stone columns. Some stems are swollen or have big bulges. These bulges might show years when growing was better or worse. The leaves have a green part called a crownshaft. This sheath wraps around the top of the trunk. The leaves can fall off easily during strong winds. This helps the tree stay standing during a hurricane.

Many people have studied these amazing plants over time. The name Roystonea comes from a man named Roy Stone. He was an engineer in the U.S. Army. In 1868, Louis and Elizabeth Agassiz compared the stems to columns. A botanist named Scott Zona studied the leaf parts too. He found that leaf bases can be different lengths. In 2002, scientists found fossilized flowers in Dominican amber. These fossils show that these palms have been around for a long time.

There are many interesting facts about these palms. The largest royal palm is 42.4 meters tall. It lives in Brazil in a place called Rio Claro. Most species grow to a similar height. The fruit is a small, round shape called a drupe. These fruits turn a deep purple color when they are ripe. Some stems are gray-white or gray-brown. One special type has violet-brown or mauve stems.

Humans use royal palms in many different ways. Many people plant them just to look at them. In some parts of the Caribbean, people eat the heart of the palm. The seeds can even be used to make a drink like coffee. In Cuba, people used seeds to feed pigs for many years. Specialized climbers used ropes to reach the seeds in the trees. This helped make very good meat and lard from the pigs.
