It grows in warm, tropical places like Mexico and the Caribbean. You can find it in Florida and parts of Central America too. This tree is very special to the people of Cuba. It is actually the national tree of that country. Many people plant it in parks just to look at it. It is used as an ornamental tree to make places look lovely.

This palm has a very distinct way it looks. The trunk is stout and very smooth. It is a grey-white color with a bulge near the bottom. A bright green part sits at the top of the trunk. This part is called a crownshaft.

The tree has about 15 large leaves. The flowers are white and have pinkish parts called anthers. The fruit starts out green when it is young. Later, it turns red and then a dark purplish-black color.

Scientists have spent a long time studying this tree. A naturalist named William Bartram first described it in 1791. He saw them growing in central Florida. Later, a German botanist named Carl Sigismund Kunth described them in 1816. He studied trees in Cuba. Another botanist named Orator F. Cook created the name Roystonea. He named the genus to honor an American general named Roy Stone. This helped organize how we name these specific palms.

There are many interesting facts about how the tree lives. In India, scientists found special bumps on the roots called nodules.

These nodules help the tree get nitrogen from the soil. This is a big deal because it is the first time this was seen in this type of tree. Animals play a big role in the tree's life too. Birds and bats eat the fruit and spread the seeds.

Bees visit the white flowers to find nectar. Even frogs and parrots use the tree for homes.

Humans use the royal palm for many different jobs. The wood can be used for construction. The leaves can be used for thatch to make roofs.

People even use the seeds to make oil or feed livestock. In Cuba, the tree has a religious role. It is used in Santería and also in Christian Palm Sunday services. It is amazing how one tree can help so many different living things.
