Many people call it the butterfly palm because of its shape. This name comes from how the leaves curve upward in many stems. It is also known as the areca palm or the yellow palm. This plant belongs to the Arecaceae family. It is a very important plant for people to grow in gardens.

Many people also grow it inside their homes as a houseplant.

This plant grows in a very special way. Multiple stems grow from the base of the plant. These stems look like long canes. They grow together to make a shape like a vase. The leaves are long and have a yellow middle part called a midrib. Each leaf has 40 to 60 pairs of small leaflets. In the summer, the plant grows yellow flowers in clusters called panicles. These clusters can be 2 feet long.

The plant also makes small, oblong fruit that changes color.

This plant has a long history in many places. It is native to the island of Madagascar. In Madagascar, the plant has two native names: rehazo and lafahazo. These names come from the Malagasy words for tree and pride or fibre. In eastern Madagascar, people have used the plant for many things. They used it for medicine and for the environment. People even used the plant to make fibre for fishing nets.

The golden cane palm can grow quite large. It usually reaches a height of 3 to 5 meters. That is about 8 to 15 feet tall. It lives in many warm places like Thailand and Vietnam. It also grows in places like Cuba and Puerto Rico. In Brazil, certain birds like to eat its fruit. These birds include the Pitangus sulphuratus and the Coereba flaveola.

The fruit starts out yellow or gold. Then it turns into a dark purple or black color.

Taking care of this plant is a fun job. It likes to live in bright, indirect sunlight. You should not put it in direct sun because it might burn. The plant likes moist soil but it does not like soggy soil. If the air is too dry, the leaf tips might turn brown. You can fix this by using a humidifier. It is a low-maintenance plant that stays healthy in warm weather.
