It is also called the cabbage palm or the imperial palm. This plant is native to several warm places. These include the Lesser Antilles and parts of South America like Colombia and Venezuela. It is also found in Trinidad and Tobago. Some of these palms have even moved to new places. They grow in Guyana and on islands like Mauritius in the Indian Ocean.

These trees often grow in wet areas. They like coastal spots near the sea or forests that flood during the year.

The way this palm grows is very interesting to see. The stem is a grey or whitish-grey color. It can be quite wide in diameter. Near the top, the stem has a green part called a crownshaft. This part is made of leaf sheaths that wrap around the stem. The crownshaft is usually about 1 meter long. The tree grows many leaves, sometimes between 16 and 22 leaves. Each leaf has a long stem and a middle part called a rachis. The small leaflets attach to the rachis at different angles. This makes the whole leaf look like a bottlebrush.

Scientists have spent a long time studying this palm. Nikolaus von Jacquin first described it in 1763. He called it Areca oleracea. Later, Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius moved it to a different group in 1838. Other scientists like Berthhold Carl Seemann and Orator F. Cook also studied it. In 1901, the name Roystonea was used for this group of palms. Many people have studied its different types over the years. For example, Scott Zona looked at how it was related to other palms in 1996.

There are many special facts about this tree. The name oleracea comes from Latin. It means "vegetable" or "herb-like." This is because people can eat parts of the plant. The fruit of the palm is long and wide. When the fruit is ripe, it turns a purplish-black color. This fruit is a very important food for animals. In the Nariva Swamp of Trinidad and Tobago, parrots eat it. Orange-winged amazon parrots and red-bellied macaws both love this fruit. A study from 1995 to 1996 showed the fruit was their main food from July to November.

People use the royal palm in many helpful ways. Some people plant them as ornamental trees to make gardens look pretty. The wood from the tree can be used for building things. Some parts of the tree are even used for food. The terminal bud can be eaten. In the West Indies, people have eaten the buds. Even the sap from young flowers can be used to make alcohol. In 1750, Griffith Hughes wrote that the flowers could be pickled like a vegetable. It is a tree that provides much for both nature and people.
