It grows tall and slender in wet places like swamps. These trees are native to eastern Amazonia in Brazil. People use almost every part of the tree for different things. They use the leaves, the wood, and the fruit. The fruit is called an açaí berry. It is small, round, and a dark purple color.

You might see it served in a delicious açaí bowl. This is a popular dessert made with frozen berry pulp. It is often topped with fruit and granola.

Each berry works in a very specific way. The fruit is a small, round drupe. A drupe is a fruit with a hard pit inside. The berry has a thin, pulpy skin called a mesocarp. Inside that is a hard part called the endocarp. This hard part holds one large seed. That single seed is very big for the size of the fruit. In fact, the seed makes up 60% to 80% of the whole berry.

The tree grows fruit all year long. However, people cannot harvest the berries during the rainy season.

There is an old story about how the tree got its name. It is a piece of folk etymology, which is a traditional story about a word. The story tells of a chief named Itaqui. During a time of famine, the chief was very unkind to newborns. His own daughter had a child that was lost. She cried and died under a new tree that sprouted. The tree provided food for the tribe. They named it açaí after the daughter, whose name was Iaçá, spelled backwards.

Today, growing açaí is a huge business in Brazil.

The state of Pará is the most important place for this. In 2022, Pará produced 150,000 tons of berries. This made US$26 million in money. That amount was 209 times greater than what was grown in 2012. There are also different types of these trees. One rare kind is called Branco, which means "White." These berries stay green even when they are ripe.

Learning about açaí helps us see how plants connect to our lives. We use the fruit for food and smoothies. We use the oil for making soaps and shampoos.

The leaves can even be woven into hats and baskets. The wood is strong and can be used for building. Even the leftover seeds can be used for animal food. The açaí palm is a busy, useful part of the rainforest. It connects the people of the Amazon to the land they live on.
