The second harvest happens between August and December and usually produces larger volumes of fruit. There are different varieties, or cultivars, of the açaí palm. One rare variety is called Branco, which means "White" in Portuguese. This cultivar is found near the Amazon estuary. Unlike most açaí, Branco berries do not change color and remain green even when they are ripe. Scientists believe this trait is caused by a recessive gene, as only about 30% of Branco seeds will actually express this color. Other varieties have been developed by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Agency, such as BRS-Pará, released in 2004, and the newer BRS Pai d'Égua. These developed varieties help manage the pulp yield, which typically ranges from 15% to 25%.
The economic impact of açaí is massive, especially in the state of Pará. This single state accounts for 90% of Brazil's total açaí economy. In 2022, Pará produced 150,000 tons of berries, generating US$26 million in revenue. This production level was a staggering 209 times greater than the volume produced in 2012. 
Nutritionally, açaí is complex and has been the subject of much scientific study. A freeze-dried powder of the fruit and skin contains significant amounts of carbohydrates, protein, and fats. For example, 100 grams of dry powder provides 534 calories and 52 grams of carbohydrates. The fats include oleic acid, palmitic acid, and linoleic acid. The fruit is also rich in anthocyanins, which are pigments that provide the dark blue color.
Beyond food, the açaí palm is deeply connected to many different industries. The oil extracted from the fruit is used in cosmetics like shampoos, soaps, and moisturizers. The leaves are woven into useful items such as hats, mats, baskets, and even roof thatch for homes. Even the heavy trunk wood is used in construction because it is resistant to pests.
