Rhynchocinetidae

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Rhynchocinetidae are a special group of small shrimp.

They are often red and white. These shrimp are also called hinge-beak shrimps. This name comes from their rostrum. A rostrum is a beak-like part on the head. This beak can move like a hinge. It is partially or completely attached to the carapace. This part of the body can move in many ways.

Scientists are not sure why they have this trait. It may help them stay safe. They might wedge themselves into a small crack. This could stop a predator from moving them.

There are two main groups in this family. One group is named Cinetorhynchus. The other group is named Rhynchocinetes. They have small differences in their shells. Rhynchocinetes have two sharp teeth on the center of the carapace. They also have a spine above the eye. They have no spines on the fourth or fifth abdominal somites.

Cinetorhynchus is a bit different. It has three teeth on the carapace. It has no spine above the eye. It has one spine on the fourth and fifth abdominal somites. These small details help scientists tell them apart.

People have studied these shrimp for a long time. For a while, scientists thought there was only one group. That group was Rhynchocinetes. It was split into two smaller parts. Then, a scientist named Holthuis made a change.

In 1995, he moved Cinetorhynchus into its own group. He did this based on the shape of the shrimp. This helped make the family structure clearer. Now, we recognize both groups as separate. This change was a big step in understanding them.

These shrimp live in many different places. You can find them in warm tropical waters. Some live in cooler temperate waters too.

They live near the shore in the littoral zone. They also live down on the continental shelf. You can find them on coral reefs. They also live on rocky reefs. One kind, Cinetorhynchus rigens, lives in Bermuda. It is a nocturnal animal. This means it hides in cracks during the day. It comes out at night to find food.

We are still learning about how these shrimp live.

They do not always go to baited traps. In Bermuda, scientists looked at what they ate. They found bits of sponge and algae. They also found small pieces of mollusc shells. The shrimp have special tools for their bodies. Their first pair of claws is very strong. In older males, these claws can be quite large. Both pairs of claws have spines at the tips. These spines can form a cage like a basket. This is a very neat way to live.
