life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Hawkfishes are a special family of marine fish. They belong to the group called Cirrhitidae. These fish live in warm, tropical seas all over the world. You can find them in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. They also live in the Pacific Ocean. Most of them stay near coral reefs or rocky areas. They like to live in shallow water.

These fish have a very cool way of hunting. They are carnivores, which means they eat meat. Many hawkfishes eat small creatures called crustaceans. One species, Cyprinocirrhitus polyactis, eats tiny drifting animals called zooplankton. Most hawkfishes sit and wait on high spots in the reef. When they see food below them, they dive down fast. This is how they got their name. They hunt just like a hawk in the sky.

Scientists have studied these fish for a long time. A man named William Sharp Macleay first named them. He was a naturalist from Scotland who lived in Australia. He recognized them as a family in 1841. The name hawkfish comes from the genus Cirrhitus. This name might mean a "lock of hair." It could also refer to small parts called cirri. These are tiny growths on their fins or nostrils.

Hawkfishes have many different shapes and sizes. Most species are quite small and have bright colors. Their bodies are shaped like an oblong. They have special fins to help them stay still. Their lower fin rays are thick and strong. These rays help them wedge into place. This keeps them steady against waves and currents. They do not have a swimbladder to help them float.

There are 33 different species of hawkfish in total. They belong to 12 different groups called genera. Some groups include Paracirrhites and Oxycirrhites. Most hawkfishes are too small for people to catch for food. However, the three largest species are sometimes fished for food. Some people also collect colorful ones for aquariums. For example, Neocirrhites armatus is kept in tanks.
