Hawkfishes live in warm, tropical seas.

You can find them near coral reefs. They also live near rocks in shallow water.

These fish have a special way of hunting. They sit and wait on high spots. Then they dive down to catch food below them. This is how they got their name. They act like hawks in the sky.

Hawkfishes use their fins to stay still. Their lower fin rays are strong. These rays help them wedge into place. This keeps them steady in waves and currents.

Most hawkfishes are small and have bright colors. They have many different patterns. Their bodies are shaped like an oblong. They do not have a swimbladder. A swimbladder is a part that helps fish float.

These fish are carnivores. This means they eat meat. They mostly eat small creatures called crustaceans. One kind eats tiny drifting animals called zooplankton. Some people keep colorful hawkfishes in tanks at home. Most are too small for people to catch for food. Only the three largest kinds are sometimes eaten.
