Rhynchocinetidae

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some small shrimp are red and white. They belong to a group called Rhynchocinetidae. These shrimp are also called hinge-beak shrimps. This name comes from their rostrum. A rostrum is a beak-like part on their head. This beak can move like a hinge. It may help them hide in small cracks. This keeps them safe from predators.

There are two main groups in this family. One group is named Cinetorhynchus. The other group is named Rhynchocinetes. They look a bit different. Rhynchocinetes have two teeth on their shell. Cinetorhynchus has three teeth on its shell.

These shrimp live in many places. They live in warm and cool waters. You can find them on coral reefs. You can also find them on rocky reefs. They live from the shore down to the deep shelf. Most of these shrimp are hard to study. One kind lives in Bermuda. It hides in cracks during the day. It comes out at night to eat. It eats bits of sponge and algae. It also eats small shell pieces.
