They live in the Indo-Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean. Some live on coral reefs. Others live on rocky reefs. These lobsters are very bright. They can be red, orange, or purple. Many have spots or stripes.

These lobsters are nocturnal. This means they stay in caves during the day. They come out at night. They are also very timid.

Reef lobsters look different from clawed lobsters. They only have one pair of full claws. The other legs have small claws called subchelate. This means the last part of the leg presses against a short bump. Clawed lobsters have three pairs of full claws.

Many people want these lobsters for fish tanks. This is the aquarium trade. Taking them from the sea can be a problem. Damaging coral reefs can also hurt them. Scientists do not have all the facts yet. They call this being data deficient. We still need to study them more.
