Reef lobster

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Reef lobsters are small and colorful sea animals. They belong to a group called Enoplometopus. These lobsters live in many warm parts of the ocean. You can find them in the Indo-Pacific. They also live in the Caribbean and the Atlantic Ocean. Some live on coral reefs. Others live on rocky reefs.

They are very important to study in these habitats.

These lobsters have a very specific way of living. They are nocturnal animals. This means they spend the daytime hiding in caves or crevices. They come out to move around at night. They are also very timid creatures. Their bodies have bright colors like red, orange, or purple. Many have white spots, rings, or stripes.

These colors make them easy to see.

Scientists look at body parts to tell them apart from other lobsters. Reef lobsters have only one pair of full claws. These are called chelae. Their other legs are subchelate. This means the end of the leg presses against a short bump. Clawed lobsters are different because they have three pairs of full claws.

Reef lobsters also have a shallow cervical groove. Males have an extra lobe on their second pleopod. This part helps with reproduction.

We do not have a fossil record for these lobsters. However, they might be related to an extinct group called Eryma. That group lived from the Permo-Triassic to the late Cretaceous. They may also be related to a Jurassic lobster named Uncina posidoniae.

This shows how they fit into history. The group Enoplometopoidea includes both these lobsters and the uncinid lobsters.

Many people want these lobsters for home fish tanks. This is called the aquarium trade. People collect them to sell. This can be a problem for the species. Destroying coral reefs also hurts them. The International Union for Conservation of Nature studies these threats. They call many species data deficient.

This means we do not have enough facts yet. We need more study to understand the danger.
