Remingtonocetidae were a group of early sea mammals. They were part of the Cetacea family. This is the group that includes whales.

These animals had long and narrow skulls. Their nose holes were on the front of their heads. Their teeth were flat on the sides. This made them look like shark teeth. They had long and low bodies. They also had short limbs. Some scientists think they looked like crocodiles.

Remingtonocetids could swim and walk on land. They likely lived near the shore. They may have swam like an otter. An otter uses a long, flat tail to move. One kind, called Dalanistes, ate food from the sea.

For a long time, people thought they lived in India and Pakistan. They lived near the ancient Tethys Ocean. But new finds show they lived in Egypt, too. This means they lived in more places. One tooth was found in North Carolina. If it is from this group, they lived in North America too.
