It was much smaller than modern elephants. One species was about 2.5 meters long. It had a very long body. Its legs were very short.

Moeritherium did not have a long trunk. Its nose was close to its face. It might have had a small nose and lip. This is called a proboscis. This is like the nose on a tapir. The animal likely lived in the water. Its eyes and ears were high on its head. This helped it see and hear while swimming. It probably ate plants from the water. Its teeth had flat shapes to help it eat. Its lower teeth looked like a spade. Its upper teeth were short, curved tusks.

These teeth helped it find food in ponds and streams.
