Remingtonocetidae were a group of early aquatic mammals. They belong to the order Cetacea. This is the group that includes modern whales. These animals were very different from whales today. They lived a long time ago during the Eocene.

Scientists find them very interesting because they show how life changed. They were part of the early steps toward living in the sea.

These mammals had very unique bodies. They had long and narrow skulls. Their nose openings were on the front of their heads. Their teeth were flat on the sides. This gave them a look like a shark.

They had long and low bodies with short limbs. Some scientists think they looked like mammalian crocodiles. They could walk on land and swim in the water. They likely lived in places near the shore.

They might have swam like a giant otter. An otter uses a long and flat tail to move through water.

Experts named this family after Remington Kellogg. He was a paleocetologist who studied ancient whale fossils.

The name of the group comes from its main type, Remingtonocetus. Many scientists have studied how these animals fit into the tree of life. Some put them in a group called Archaeoceti. Others call them part of the Odontoceti. This shows how much we are still learning about them.

We know about several different types in this family. These include Remingtonocetus, Andrewsiphius, and Attockicetus. Attockicetus is the oldest genus known. Other types are Dalanistes, Kutchicetus, and Rayanistes.

One kind, Dalanistes, had a diet of things from the ocean. Most fossils are found as skull pieces. Dental remains are quite rare to find. We only know the body shape of Kutchicetus from one specimen. That specimen had a long and muscular back and tail.

For a long time, people thought they lived only in one area. They were thought to live by the Tethys Ocean. This area is now part of Pakistan and India. But new finds changed what we know. The discovery of Rayanistes in Egypt shows they lived in more places.

A tooth was even found in North Carolina, USA. If that tooth belongs to them, they lived in North America too. This means they may have traveled across the Atlantic Ocean.
