Crocodilians are amazing reptiles that live in both water and on land.

They belong to a group called Crocodilia. This group includes true crocodiles, alligators, caimans, and gharials.

These animals are very special because they are the closest living relatives of birds. Both birds and crocodilians are the only survivors of a group called Archosauria. They are powerful hunters that live in warm, tropical places. You can find them in the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania.

Most crocodilians have a very similar way their bodies work. They have flat heads with long snouts and thick, scaly skin.

Their eyes, ears, and nostrils are all located on the very top of their heads. This helps them see and breathe while they stay mostly underwater. Their tails are flat on the sides to help them swim well.

When they move on land, they use a "high walk" where they hold their legs straight. They are also ectotherms, which means they are cold-blooded. They must use the environment to help control their body temperature.

Crocodilians have a long and interesting history on Earth. Their ancestors, called pseudosuchians, appeared about 250 million years ago.

During the Mesozoic era, these early relatives became very diverse. Some were small insect-eaters, while others were large hunters. The group we know today, called eusuchians, appeared during the Early Cretaceous period.

The oldest known eusuchian is named Hylaeochampsa vectiana. It lived on the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom. This long history shows how well these animals have adapted to their homes.

There are many different types of crocodilians with unique features.

Alligators and caimans usually have broad, U-shaped jaws. When they close their mouths, you only see their upper teeth. Crocodiles have narrower, V-shaped jaws. You can see both rows of teeth when a crocodile closes its mouth.

Gharials are different because they have extremely long, slender jaws. They can be very small, like dwarf caimans.

Other species, like the Nile crocodile, can grow to be huge. Crocodilians are mostly carnivores that eat meat.

Humans have lived alongside crocodilians for a very long time. People in Ancient Egypt even included them in their art and stories.

Today, many crocodilians live in freshwater, but some can swim in salty sea water. Some species, like the Nile crocodile, can be dangerous to humans. This is why protecting their homes is a very important job. Habitat destruction and hunting are big threats to them.

However, farming crocodilians has helped reduce the illegal trade of wild skins. Many mothers also show great care for their young after the eggs hatch.
