A crocodile is a large, semiaquatic reptile. This means they spend much of their time in the water.

You can find these animals in tropical areas. They live in Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Australia. Most crocodiles like freshwater places like rivers and lakes. However, some species can live in saltwater too.

They are carnivores, which means they eat meat. They hunt fish, birds, and mammals. Some smaller ones might even eat crabs or molluscs. Unlike alligators, crocodiles are very sensitive to the cold.

You can tell a true crocodile apart from an alligator by its head. A crocodile has a long, V-shaped snout.

Their upper and lower jaws are the same width. This makes their teeth look different when they close their mouths. In a crocodile, the teeth from the lower jaw stay visible. They sit along the edge or even outside the upper jaw. This is different from an alligator, where the teeth fit into small holes.

Crocodiles also have more webbing on their back toes.

Crocodiles have a special way to live in salty water. They have salt glands that help them filter salt out.

Alligators have these glands too, but they do not work. This helps crocodiles survive in many different environments. They are also known to be quite aggressive animals. Many species face a hard job of staying alive today. Some are even classified as critically endangered. This means they are at high risk of extinction.

People have been writing about crocodiles for a very long time. The word comes from a Greek word meaning "stones worm."

Ancient Greek stories mention them in the sixth century BC. A writer named Herodotus also wrote about them later. In the first century AD, Pliny the Elder used the Latin word. By the 1300s, the word appeared in English poetry.

Later, famous writers like William Shakespeare used the name too.

Scientists study crocodiles to learn about their family tree. Georges Cuvier named the crocodile family in 1807.

They belong to a group called Crocodilia. This group also includes alligators and gharials. Even though they look similar, they are in different families. Recent DNA studies show crocodiles are closer to gharials than to alligators.

This helps us understand how these amazing reptiles changed over time.
