Purple Rain is a famous music album by the American musician Prince.

He made this music with his backing band, the Revolution. The album was released on June 25, 1984, by Warner Bros. Records. It served as the soundtrack for a movie with the same name. Many people consider this the most pop-oriented music of his entire career. It is still celebrated today as a major piece of art.

The music on this album is very thick and layered. It uses many different sounds like guitars and keyboards. It also uses electronic synthesizer effects and drum machines. Some parts of the music sound very grand or even psychedelic. Prince wrote almost all the songs himself. For the song "When Doves Cry," he played every single instrument. He even decided to leave out the bass line to make it sound different. This made the song stand out from other pop hits of the 1980s.

Prince and the Revolution worked hard to create these sounds. The album was mostly recorded between May 1983 and March 1984. Some songs, like "Purple Rain," were recorded live during a show in Minneapolis. This was the first time an album of his included live recordings. The title song was originally meant to be a country song. Prince once asked Stevie Nicks to help write the lyrics for it. She felt the music was too much for her to handle. Later, the band played it differently and changed the whole feeling.

This album was a huge success all over the world. It spent 24 weeks at the very top of the Billboard 200 chart. It stayed on the music charts for a total of 167 weeks. By 1996, the album had been certified 13 times platinum. Prince sold about 25 million copies of the album globally. He won Grammy Awards for the Best Rock Performance and Best Score. The album was even added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry.

Some parts of the album caused arguments in the 1980s. People had concerns about the lyrics in songs like "Darling Nikki." These complaints helped lead to the use of Parental Advisory stickers on album covers. This was a way to let parents know what was inside. Despite these debates, the music remains very important to history. It is often ranked among the greatest albums ever made. It shows how electronic sounds and rock music can work together beautifully.
