Released on May 16, 1966, it is seen as a masterpiece of art. Brian Wilson led the group and served as the main composer. He wanted to create a complete musical statement. The album was a big step away from their earlier songs about surfing. Instead, it focused on deeper, more personal feelings. Many people now call it one of the greatest albums in history.

Making the album was a very big job.

Wilson worked with a lyricist named Tony Asher to write the songs. They met in Los Angeles and worked together for about three weeks. Wilson would share musical ideas or melodies he had already made. Then, Asher would help choose the right words to match the music. They wanted to write songs that felt like classic American love songs. This teamwork helped create songs like "You Still Believe in Me."

Wilson used the recording studio like a musical tool.

He did not just use standard rock instruments. He added violins, cellos, and bass flutes to the music. He also used layered vocal harmonies to make the sound very rich. This style was inspired by a technique called the "Wall of Sound." For this album, Wilson used professional studio musicians instead of just the band members. This was the first time a rock group used this method for a whole album.

Recording took place between January and April in 1966.

The total cost to make the album was over $70,000. This was a huge amount of money for that time. Some songs, like "Sloop John B," were recorded during this period. The album reached number 10 on the Billboard charts in the United States. However, it was even more popular in the United Kingdom. There, it reached number 2 and stayed in the top ten for six months.

This album changed how people think about popular music. It helped show that an album could be a single, connected work of art. Because of its unique sounds, it helped start new styles like soft rock and progressive pop. It also encouraged musicians to use more synthesizers in their work. Even though it was not an instant hit everywhere, its importance grew over time. Today, many famous music lists place it at the very top.
