It was released on 5 August 1966. This album is often called one of the most important in music history. It is famous for its many different musical styles and sounds. The songs show the band moving into a new era of creativity. Some people say this was the start of their psychedelic period. This means the music felt colorful and experimental.

The band used the recording studio like a musical instrument. They did not just record songs they played live. Instead, they used many new studio tools to create sounds. They used a trick called automatic double tracking to change voices. They also used reversed tapes to make sounds go backward. They used close miking to catch small details in the sound. They even used instruments that were not part of a normal rock band.

The band spent over 220 hours recording the tracks. This was much more time than they spent on their last album. They were inspired by the busy art scene in London at that time.

There are 14 tracks on the original UK version of the album. One song is "Eleanor Rigby," which uses a string octet for music. Another song, "Love You To," uses music from India.

It also helped create styles like electronica and progressive rock. Many critics believe it is the best album the Beatles ever made.
