It is often called "The White Album." The cover is plain white with no pictures. It has the band's name embossed on the sleeve. This was a big change from their bright cover for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The album is a double album. It contains 30 different songs. Many people think it is one of the best albums ever made. It is a very diverse collection of music.

The music on the album covers many styles. These include folk, country rock, and British blues. You can also hear ska, music hall, and hard rock. Some parts are even called avant-garde. Unlike their older work, each song stays true to one style. For example, the rock songs are purely rock and roll. The folk songs are purely folk. This makes the album feel very different from their previous records. The band used many different ways to record these sounds.

Most of the songs were written in India.

The band went there to study Transcendental Meditation. They wanted a spiritual break from the world. They stayed in a place called Rishikesh between February and April 1968. The only Western instrument they had was the acoustic guitar. Because of this, many songs were written as simple acoustic pieces. Some songs, like "Blackbird," were recorded with only part of the group. John Lennon wrote 14 of the songs on the album.

Recording the album was a very hard job.

The band recorded mostly at Abbey Road Studios in London. They also used Trident Studios. The members often argued about creative choices. There was also tension because of John Lennon's partner, Yoko Ono. She was the first partner allowed in the studio. Some people even left the group during the sessions. Ringo Starr left the band for two weeks in August. The engineer Geoff Emerick also quit during a session.

Even with these problems, the album was a huge success. It reached number one on the charts in Britain and the United States. It has been certified 24 times platinum by the RIAA. This ties it for fifth place of all time. In 2018, a new version was released for the 50th anniversary. The album shows how the band members were becoming individual artists. It is a record that captures a turning point in their history. It remains a very important part of music culture today.
