The Beatles, often called "The White Album," is the ninth studio album by the English rock band the Beatles. Released on 22 November 1968, it stands as the group's only double album. The album is famous for its striking, minimalist cover design. It features a plain white sleeve with no graphics or text except for the band's name embossed on the surface. This was a deliberate choice to contrast with the vivid, colorful artwork of their 1967 release, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Musically, the album is recognized for its fragmentary style and immense variety. It covers a vast range of genres, including folk, country rock, British blues, ska, music hall, hard rock, and avant-garde. Unlike their previous records, which often mixed several styles within a single track, the songs on this album tend to stay faithful to one specific genre. For example, the rock tracks remain purely rock and roll, while the folk songs stay strictly folk. This approach has led some critics to view the album as a postmodern work.

A large portion of the album's material originated during a spiritual retreat in India. Between February and April 1968, the band members traveled to Rishikesh to study Transcendental Meditation with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. They viewed this trip as a chance to find spiritual respite from worldly life. During this time, the group wrote approximately 40 new songs. Of the 30 tracks on the final album, 19 were written during this period in India. Because the only Western instrument available to them was the acoustic guitar, many songs began as simple acoustic pieces.

The recording process was complex and often marked by significant tension. The sessions began in late May 1968 and lasted until mid-October. Most of the work took place at Abbey Road Studios in London, though some sessions occurred at Trident Studios. The band's internal dynamics were shifting as each member sought to assert themselves as an individual artist. This friction was worsened by the presence of Yoko Ono, John Lennon's new partner. She was the first partner of a band member to be present in the studio, which subverted the group's long-standing policy.

These interpersonal conflicts led to several disruptions during the production. Producer George Martin took an unannounced holiday, leaving his protégé Chris Thomas in charge. Engineer Geoff Emerick eventually quit in the middle of a session due to the frequent bickering. Even drummer Ringo Starr left the band for two weeks in August 1968. Despite these struggles, the band adopted new technical methods. They upgraded from 4-track to 8-track recording during the sessions. They also changed their workflow, recording rehearsals and jams before adding overdubs to the best takes.

Despite the chaos, the album was a massive commercial and critical success. It reached the top of the record charts in both Britain and the United States. The album's impact is reflected in its sales; it has been certified 24× platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). This achievement ties it for fifth place of all time in the United States. While some critics at the time found certain satirical songs unimportant, the album is now widely regarded as one of the greatest musical works ever produced.

The White Album serves as a historical document of a band in transition. It captures the moment when the collective identity of the Beatles began to fracture into individual musical paths. The diversity of the tracks reflects the different directions the members were moving. Some songs were recorded by the full group, but only 16 of the 30 tracks feature all four members. Others were recorded solo or by only a few members. To celebrate its legacy, a remixed and expanded edition was released in 2018 to mark the album's 50th anniversary.
