They are widely considered the most influential band in popular music history. The group was vital to the development of 1960s counterculture. They helped the world recognize popular music as a serious art form. Their sound grew from skiffle, beat, and 1950s rock 'n' roll. They eventually incorporated classical music and traditional pop into their work. The band also explored many different styles. These included folk, Indian music, psychedelia, and hard rock.

Before the final lineup, the group went through several changes. They had different drummers and even a different bass player. Stuart Sutcliffe was an early member who played bass. He left the group before the band achieved global fame. The band's evolution was shaped by these different members and their musical interests.

The group's formation began with a skiffle group called the Quarrymen.

The band went through several name changes during their early years. They were known as the Quarrymen, Johnny and the Moondogs, and the Silver Beetles. This period of experimentation helped them find their unique identity.

Early success came from playing long residencies in Hamburg, Germany.

They played in clubs like the Indra Club and the Kaiserkeller. These performances were often all-night shows. Such intense schedules helped the band build their professional skills. In Liverpool, they became part of the Merseybeat movement. In 1961, they met Brian Epstein at the Cavern Club. Epstein became their manager in January 1962. He helped transform them into a professional act. He encouraged them to stop swearing and smoking on stage.

Producer George Martin helped them develop their sound at EMI studios. Martin was essential in expanding their success. The band moved away from live touring in 1966. This allowed them to focus on complex studio recordings. They produced sophisticated albums like Rubber Soul and Revolver. They also created the landmark album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967. These works helped start the "album era" of music. They also advanced electronic music and music videos.

The Beatles achieved unprecedented commercial and critical success.
