It was released on February 4, 1977, by Warner Bros. Records. The music is a mix of electric and acoustic instruments. It uses guitars, keyboards, and strong rhythms to create its sound. Many people love it because of the beautiful vocal harmonies. These happen when the three singers blend their voices together. The album is known for being very powerful and meaningful.

Making the album was a very hard job for the band. They recorded most of it in 1976 at the Record Plant.

This was a wooden building in Sausalito, California. The band worked with producers Ken Caillat and Richard Dashut. They used a 3M 24-track tape machine to record. They also used an API mixing console to fix the sound. Sometimes the tapes even got damaged during the long sessions. A specialist had to use a special tool to fix them.

The songs were shaped by many difficult things happening to the members. The band members were going through many breakups and personal problems. For example, John and Christine McVie were getting a divorce. Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were also having a difficult relationship. Mick Fleetwood also dealt with problems in his own home. These sad and hard feelings became the lyrics for the songs. The band members had to make big emotional sacrifices to finish the work.

"Don't Stop" was written by Christine McVie to be about optimism. The song "The Chain" is special because every member of the band helped write it. All four singles from the album reached the top 10 in the US. "Dreams" was even a number one song.

Rumours became one of the best-selling albums in history. It sold over 40 million copies around the world by 2023. It reached number one on charts in both the UK and the US. The album won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1978. Time magazine even put it on a list of the 100 greatest albums ever. It is now kept in the National Recording Registry because it is so important to culture.
