It was released on August 10, 1979, by Epic Records. This album was very important because it showed Jackson's creative freedom. He wanted to show his own individual style for the first time. The music is a mix of many different sounds. It includes disco, pop, funk, R&B, soft rock, and Broadway ballads. People love it because it feels full of joy and energy.

Making the album was a big job that took many months. Recording happened between December 4, 1978, and June 3, 1979. Jackson worked with producer Quincy Jones to create the sound. They first met while working on the film The Wiz. Jackson even watched videos of animals like cheetahs to learn graceful movements. For the music, they used many different studios in Los Angeles. Some places recorded the horns, while others recorded the strings. An engineer named Bruce Swedien helped mix the sounds together.

Before this album, Jackson was part of a group called the Jackson 5. He released four solo albums with Motown between 1972 and 1975. Later, his group became known as the Jacksons. For this new project, Jackson wanted to work independently. He did not want the music to sound like his family group. He even wrote some of the songs himself. One song, "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," started as a melody he hummed in his kitchen.

Jackson became the first solo artist to have four Top 10 hits from just one album.
