This album was a major moment in music history. It was his third time working with producer Quincy Jones. Jackson wanted to show a tougher side of himself with this project. He used the word "bad" to mean great, tough, or courageous. His look changed to match this new, edgy style. He wore black clothing with buckles and metal-studded belts.

This era helped him move from a youthful image to a more streetwise persona.

Making the album was a very busy and intense process. Jackson and his team worked for two years between 1985 and 1987. They used many different tools to create new sounds. They used digital synthesizers like the Fairlight CMI and the Synclavier PSMT. They also layered sounds from guitars, drums, and saxophones. Jackson was more involved in the making of the music than ever before. He wrote almost every song on the record himself.

He even recorded some songs at his home studio in Los Angeles.

The history of the album began with a lot of pressure. Jackson's previous album, Thriller, had been a huge success in 1982. Some people thought it would be hard to follow such a big hit.

Jackson worked with a group called the "B team" at his home. Later, he worked with the "A team" at Westlake Studios. This included producer Quincy Jones and engineer Bruce Swedien. The recording sessions were so hard that people worked for days without rest. Jackson even wrote about sixty songs during this time.

Bad was a massive success with many impressive numbers. It was the best-selling album of both 1987 and 1988. Worldwide, it sold over 35 million copies.

The album had five songs that reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. These hits were "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," "Bad," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Man in the Mirror," and "Dirty Diana." Jackson also went on his first solo world tour. This tour earned $125 million and was the highest-grossing tour at that time.

This album connects to many other parts of music history. It helped change how people used digital technology in songs. The album earned Grammy Awards for best music video and best engineering.

Many people still list it as one of the greatest albums ever made. It showed how a singer could use new tools to find a new sound. Jackson's work on this album helped influence many modern musicians. Even today, people look back at this era as a very important time for pop music.
