Bad is the seventh studio album by American singer Michael Jackson. Released on August 31, 1987, by Epic Records, it stands as a landmark in dance-pop and R&B music.

The album was a major artistic statement of independence. Jackson composed or co-produced all but two of the tracks. Through his music, he explored diverse themes like celebrity, romance, world peace, and self-improvement. This project marked his third and final collaboration with legendary producer Quincy Jones. It arrived during a period of immense pressure following the massive success of his 1982 album, Thriller.

The production of Bad was a complex, multi-stage technical process. It took two years of intense work between 1985 and 1987. Jackson utilized a two-tiered recording system to manage his massive output. He first worked with a "B team" at his Hayvenhurst home studio in Encino, Los Angeles. This group included musicians like Bill Bottrell and Matt Forger. These early demos were later brought to Westlake Studios for the "A team." This elite group featured Quincy Jones and engineer Bruce Swedien.

The sessions were so demanding that staff often worked for days without rest. Jackson was highly ambitious, reportedly writing sixty songs and recording thirty-three of them.

Musically, the album moved toward a harder-edged and more aggressive sound. Jackson wanted to move away from his youthful image toward a tougher persona. He used the word "bad" to mean great, tough, or courageous. To match this, his visual style featured black clothing, buckles, and metal-studded belts.

The sound incorporated new digital synthesizer technology to create innovative textures. The team used tools like the Fairlight CMI and the Synclavier PSMT. They often layered these digital sounds with traditional instruments. These sessions included guitars, organs, drums, bass, percussion, saxophones, and even washboards. This blend of hard rock, funk, and digital synthesis defined the album's unique character.

The album's tracklist contains several distinct and notable songs. The title track, "Bad," was inspired by a newspaper story about a boy from the ghetto.

Jackson also recorded "The Way You Make Me Feel," which was originally titled "Hot Fever." The song "Speed Demon" used racing-car sound effects provided by Christopher Currell. "Liberian Girl" was a song Jackson had written as early as 1983. He claimed the idea came to him while playing pinball.

Two tracks were not written by Jackson: "Just Good Friends," featuring Stevie Wonder, and "Man in the Mirror," written by Siedah Garrett and Glen Ballard.

Despite the creative success, Jackson faced significant personal and public challenges. His changing physical appearance, including plastic surgery and a lighter complexion, caused controversy. This led to a decline in his popularity within the United States.

However, his global impact remained massive. The Bad tour became his first solo world tour. It grossed $125 million, making it the highest-grossing concert tour at that time. This tour demonstrated his incredible ability to connect with international audiences despite local backlash.

Statistically, Bad was a commercial powerhouse. It was the best-selling album of both 1987 and 1988. Worldwide, it sold over 35 million copies and is certified 11× platinum in the US.

The album topped the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart for six consecutive weeks. It produced a record five number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100. These hits were "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," "Bad," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Man in the Mirror," and "Dirty Diana." The album also earned Grammy Awards for Best Engineered Recording – Non Classical and Best Music Video.

Bad connects deeply to the evolution of modern music production. It showed how digital technology could be integrated into pop music. The use of advanced synthesizers and complex layering influenced many future artists. The album's success also highlighted the shift toward globalized music stardom. It remains a key study in how an artist manages high expectations and technological change. Even decades later, it is cited as a major influence on contemporary music and production techniques.
