It was released on June 25, 1984, by Warner Bros. Records. The album served as the soundtrack for the 1984 film of the same name. Prince recorded much of this music with his backing band, the Revolution. While many of his previous albums were solo efforts, this project emphasized full band performances. It is widely considered the most pop-oriented work of his career. However, it also contains experimental elements that influenced his later music.

The production of the album is musically dense and highly layered. Prince used a wide variety of instruments to create a grand, psychedelic sound. These included guitars, keyboards, and electronic synthesizer effects. He also utilized drum machines to build complex rhythms. The album is noted for synthesizing electronic elements with organic instrumentation. This blend of sounds helped consolidate the genres of rock and R&B. This unique combination helped define the musical landscape of the mid-1980s.

Prince and the Revolution followed a specific creative process during the recording sessions. Most of the album was recorded between May 1983 and March 1984. Some tracks, such as "I Would Die 4 U" and "Baby I'm A Star," were recorded live. These were captured during a show at First Avenue in Minneapolis on August 3, 1983. This marked the first time Prince included live recordings on an album. The title track, "Purple Rain," underwent a significant transformation during its creation. It was originally written as a country song intended for a collaboration with Stevie Nicks. After she declined to write the lyrics, the Revolution played the song with more intensity. This changed the feeling from a mellow country song to a powerful rock piece.

The album features several distinct types of performances. Six tracks feature the full band, including "Let's Go Crazy" and "Computer Blue." Other tracks are essentially solo performances by Prince. For example, he played every instrument on the lead single, "When Doves Cry." He made the unconventional choice to remove the bass line from that song. He decided that including a bass line would make the track feel too conventional. Other songs, like "Take Me with U," feature co-lead vocals from Apollonia. Some tracks also include a string section arranged by Prince and Lisa Coleman.

Purple Rain was a massive commercial success and reached many milestones. It spent 24 consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. The album remained on the charts for a total of 167 weeks. By 1996, the RIAA had certified the album 13 times platinum. Worldwide, the album has sold approximately 25 million copies. This makes it one of the best-selling albums of all time. The singles "When Doves Cry" and "Let's Go Crazy" both reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Despite its success, the album faced some controversy during its release. The music video for "When Doves Cry" was considered too explicit for television by network executives. Additionally, the lyrics in the song "Darling Nikki" drew complaints from Tipper Gore and the Parents Music Resource Center. These complaints contributed to the implementation of Parental Advisory stickers on album covers. These stickers were a way for record labels to address concerns about lyrical content. Even with these debates, the album received widespread critical acclaim for its innovation.

The cultural impact of Purple Rain is reflected in many prestigious honors. Prince and the Revolution won Grammy Awards for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. They also won for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media. The album was eventually inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. It was also added to the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry. This list includes recordings that are considered culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant. The Purple Rain era ended when the album Around the World in a Day was released in 1985.
