Usher's musical journey began in a church youth choir in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He joined the choir at age nine under the direction of his mother, Jonnetta Patton. His grandmother was the first to recognize his singing ability. At age 12, he became a member of a five-person R&B group called NuBeginning. The group recorded ten songs and released a self-titled album in 1993. However, his mother decided he would be more successful as a solo artist. She withdrew him from the group when he was 13 years old.

Transitioning to a solo career involved significant professional challenges. While preparing for his debut, Usher lost his voice due to puberty. This caused his record label, LaFace, to become skeptical of his future. To help him adapt to the industry, he was sent to New York City. There, he lived with record executive Sean Combs to attend "Flavor Camp."

In 1994, at age 15, he released his self-titled debut album. The album sold over 500,000 copies by late 2008. Although it faced some public backlash regarding his age, it established his early career.

Usher achieved massive commercial success through a series of landmark albums. His 1997 album, My Way, featured the number-one single "Nice & Slow." This was followed by his third album, 8701, in 2001. That album sold eight million copies and included the hits "U Remind Me" and "U Got It Bad."

His fourth album, Confessions, released in 2004, became a global phenomenon. It remains the best-selling album by a Black artist in the 21st century. The album earned a diamond certification from the RIAA. It produced four consecutive number-one singles, including "Yeah!" and "Burn."

His dominance continued across multiple decades of music history. In 2008, he released Here I Stand, which produced the single "Love in This Club." Billboard named him the number-one Hot 100 artist of the 2000s. His sixth album, Raymond v. Raymond, released in 2010, featured the hit "OMG." This achievement made him one of the few artists to top the Billboard Hot 100 in three consecutive decades. He has continued to release music through albums like Looking 4 Myself, Hard II Love, and Coming Home.

Beyond his recording career, Usher has expanded into acting and business. He has starred in films such as The Faculty, She's All That, and Hands of Stone. In 2008, he co-founded the Raymond-Braun Media Group (RBMG) with Scooter Braun. Through this label, he helped manage the early career of singer Justin Bieber. He also served as a coach on the television show The Voice from 2013 to 2014.

These roles show his versatility outside of the recording studio.

Usher also uses his platform to support charitable causes and community service. In 1999, he founded the non-profit organization Usher's New Look. This organization focuses on helping young people. His cultural impact was highlighted in 2024 when he performed the Super Bowl LVIII halftime show. This single performance drew 123 million viewers within the United States. His career represents a massive intersection of music, business, and philanthropy.
