Pupa

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A pupa is a very important stage in the life of many insects. This stage happens after the larva stage and before the insect becomes an adult. Insects that go through this change are called holometabolous. They follow a path of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and imago, which is the adult. This whole series of changes is known as metamorphosis. The pupa is a time for building a new body.

Inside the pupa, a amazing thing happens. The insect breaks down its old larval parts to make room for new ones. New adult structures grow from special groups of cells called imaginal discs. Most pupae do not eat and stay in one place. However, some are very active, like the mosquito pupa. These are called tumblers because they can swim around.

Many insects use different ways to stay safe during this time. Since most pupae cannot move well, they must hide. Some insects spin a silk case called a cocoon around themselves. Moths often do this to stay protected. Other insects might stay underground or hide in nests. Some even use chemicals or make sounds to scare away enemies.

There are different types of pupae depending on their shape. A chrysalis is a name used for the pupa of a butterfly. The word comes from the Ancient Greek word for gold. This is because many butterfly pupae look metallic. Some pupae have moving parts called mandibles to help them get out. Others have parts that stay attached closely to their bodies.

When the adult is ready, it must leave the shell. This act is called eclosion or emergence. The insect often splits its pupal case to get out. Butterflies often emerge in the morning, but mosquitoes emerge at night. Once the adult leaves, the empty shell is called an exuvia. The adult may even sit on the shell to harden its wings.
