Larva

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A larva is a special stage in the life of many animals. It is a juvenile form that happens before metamorphosis. Metamorphosis is the big change an animal undergoes to become an adult.

Many living things have this stage. This includes insects, some spiders, amphibians, and cnidarians. Larvae often look very different from their adult forms. They may have unique body parts or organs that adults do not have.

Their diet can also be quite different from the adults. This stage is very important for the growth of the animal.

How a larva works depends on its goal. Most larvae must eat a lot of food to fuel their change into adults.

Some larvae live in different places than the adults. For example, a tadpole lives in water but an adult frog lives on land. This helps them stay safe from predators. It also means they do not have to fight adults for the same food. Some larvae are mobile to help spread the species to new places. They can be planktotrophic, which means they eat food, or lecithotrophic, which means they do not eat.

Scientists have studied these forms for a long time. In 1913, Antonio Berlese created a way to classify certain insect larvae. He looked at how they were built. He divided them into four main types. Some are called apodous because they have no legs at all. Others are called polypod, which are larvae like caterpillars that have extra legs on their bellies. There are also oligopod larvae that have six legs. This helps researchers understand how different insects grow and change.

There are many specific names for different kinds of larvae. A caterpillar is the larva of a butterfly or moth. A maggot is the larva of a fly. A mosquito larva is often called a wriggler.

In the ocean, some larvae are called nauplius or zoea. Some tiny sea animals, like barnacles, stay in one place as adults but move around as larvae. This helps them find new homes. Even some fish have special larval stages called ichthyoplankton. There are hundreds of different names depending on the animal.

Learning about larvae helps us understand how life works. You might see a caterpillar on a leaf in your garden. You might see a tadpole swimming in a pond. These are both larvae working hard to grow.

In some groups, like paper wasps, the larvae even rely on others for food. Female workers feed them to help them grow. Even males can help, though they are not as efficient. By looking at these small creatures, we see the amazing steps of life.
