Tadpole

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A tadpole is the larval stage of an amphibian. This is the middle step between being an embryo and an adult.

Most tadpoles live entirely in the water. Some special species have tadpoles that live on land instead.

They often have fish-like features to help them survive. These features include swimming tails and gills for breathing. They also have a lateral line to sense their surroundings.

Changing from a baby to an adult is called metamorphosis. This process happens in many clear steps. First, the tadpole begins to grow its limbs. The back legs grow first, followed by the front legs.

At the same time, lungs develop so the animal can breathe air. The tadpole will swim to the surface to gulp air. Finally, the tail is absorbed into the body.

Many people have studied these creatures for a long time. Scientists found a very old tadpole fossil in 2024. This fossil belongs to a species called Notobatrachus deguistioi. It comes from the Middle Jurassic period.

Most tadpoles do not have hard skeletons. This makes it hard to find fossils of them. However, traces of biofilms have helped preserve some ancient remains. Some fossils even show a brain case made of calcium carbonate.

Different tadpoles have very different diets and sizes. Most frog tadpoles are herbivorous and eat decaying plants. They have long, spiral guts to digest this organic matter. Some species, like the New Mexico spadefoot toad, become carnivorous if food is scarce.

These tadpoles can even eat their own siblings. Sizes vary a lot between different kinds of frogs. The paradoxical frog tadpole can reach 10 centimeters long. It eventually shrinks to a much smaller adult size.

Many animals show special ways of caring for their young. Some frogs lay eggs on leaves above the water. Female Pipa frogs even carry eggs inside their own skin.

Male African bullfrogs will guard their tadpoles from threats. Other frogs, like poison dart frogs, carry their young to special spots. This care helps the tadpoles survive until they are adults. You might see similar care in other animals that protect their babies.
