They have tails to help them swim. Tadpoles also have gills to breathe underwater.

Some tadpoles have gills on the outside of their bodies. Soon, they go through metamorphosis. This is a way of changing from a baby to an adult.

During this change, the tadpole grows legs. The back legs grow first. Then, the front legs grow. The tadpole also grows lungs to breathe air. It will swim to the top to gulp air. The tail gets smaller as the body uses it up.

Most tadpoles eat soft, old plants. They have long guts to help them digest this food. However, some tadpoles are different. Some eat other small animals. Even their own kind! Tadpoles can be many sizes. One kind can grow very long. Others stay quite small. We have even found fossils of tadpoles from a long time ago.
